The coronavirus epidemic in more than 30 countries all over the world has forced a number of airlines to suspend flights to and from China – one of the busiest tourist markets in the world. Flights to and from Wuhan, the epicenter of the virus, have been massively discontinued, and cancellation of flights has spread to the main centers of China – Beijing and Shanghai. To reduce the risk, countries around the world have restricted the admission of foreign nationals who have recently traveled to China, and some of the largest and busiest international airports have begun announcing preventative measures against the spread of the virus.
Intensive preventative measures are being taken there, including the closure of outbound traffic from Wuhan. Airports around China have begun to investigate their passengers and to treat even those with the mildest symptoms.
Airports in Europe
Some of them started to screen arrival passengers. Heathrow London Airport has designated a separate area to check on passengers arriving from Wuhan. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has recommended that airlines provide universal safety kits for the flight crew to and from affected countries.
Airports in Bulgaria
We have introduced extraordinary measures against coronavirus infection. Special heat cameras detect the temperature of all arriving passengers at Sofia, Varna and Burgas airports. Passengers over 37 degrees are taken to an airport detention center.
Airports in Turkey
Our neighbour checks on passengers using thermal cameras began. Turkey’s largest carrier, Turkish Airlines, has temporarily canceled its flights to China.
The US has always had tight controls in place but is increasingly checking travelers arriving for symptoms of the virus, temporarily imposing a travel ban on Chinese nationals. The check was increased to a total of 20 US airports within a week.
How do airports screen passengers for thermal screening?
Thermal screening is performed using mass screening systems that measure the temperature of the skin at high speed. Such rapid mass screening guarantees that security measures will be taken without causing delays and discomfort to passengers.
