Want to get away to a nice place for Christmas? It’s a well-kept secret that the best way to do this is to fly… on Christmas Day.
Most people would never think of flying on Christmas Day.
What is worse than spending one of the brightest days of the year crushing with people in a hurry at the airports or fighting with immigration? And imagine the expense. Everyone knows that buying a flight at Christmas requires the finances of an Arab Emirate.
Leaving all the boring stuff aside, what is to fly on Christmas Day itself?
Fantastic. Let me convince you of this by telling you about a friend of mine who flew at Christmas Day few years ago. And from what she said, this was the greatest experience in her life.
On Christmas Day the Sidney airport was quiet – no queues, no people in a hurry and no stress. Only Christmas decoration, happy music and smiling flight attendants. Onboard were people who were flying home to see their families, to get together with their loved ones. One young man was travelling all the way only to propose to his girlfriend on Christmas. Another one was marine infantryman in Australia and just found out that his wife got into labour. In everyone’s eyes could be read an excitement, hope and happiness.
It is so exciting to listen this. But the most emotional moment was when all the passengers onboard heard the voice of the captain. “Hello everyone, this is your captain speaking. Just to let you know that it is now officially Christmas Day. Happy Christmas to you all!”
My friend could not stand the emotion and bursted into happy tears.
The cabin crew adorned themselves with reindeer antlers and tinsel and served us champagne and a Christmas dinner. All of the passengers were in wonderful mood and shared the Christmas Day with other strangers. It was also the moment where a lot of new friendships started.
The biggest surprise, however, was still to come. Some of you have already been to Heathrow Airport and know how hard is it to pass the whole place, to check and to get information for everything they need to know. All of this without to get lost and to be right on time and also to have some minutes for refreshing.
But on Christmas morning it was a mirage. The whole empty airport reminded of a desert. It was as if everyone were evacuated because of an emergency or just disappeared out of nowhere. There were no endless noisy queues and fight for reaching luggage – it was checked and received in record time. Amazing, right?
The most satisfying moment was to come at her parents’ home and to share the holidays with them. Thinking of her companions, her spiritual travel was completed.
So, if you’re thinking of travelling somewhere this Christmas, don’t forget the option of flying on Christmas Day. It’ll probably be cheaper than flying earlier in December and it’ll be an emotional gift that you will remember for years.
