What happens to my skin during flight?

30.11.2017Niciun comentariuЕлена Владимирова

When it comes to flying, there is a reason for it to be only for birds. Our skin physiology is programmed for living on earth. Setting aside sitting with hours into a seat with the size of a toaster and the sleeping, which is often impossible, our skin can be more pretentious.

Let’s see what happens to it at  30,000 feet and how exactly to save the situation in order to remember the traveling with good emotions.

  1. The humidity of a desert.

Translate it like seriously dehydrated skin. Typically, skin is comfortable when the humidity is between 40 to 70 percent, depending on the living place. In the most of the airplane cabins the humidity is at about 20 percent. That’s less than half of what the skin is used to. That’s why when it comes to imbalance, the skin becomes more pretentious – dryness, tightness, redness. What we can do, especially in environment where the water is not a factor, is to get bottle of water, fruits and cream, rich on hyaluronic acid, because it means only one thing – moisturizing, moisturizing, and only moisturizing. This is the place to say that thermal water or spray mist is not going to help, because as the water evaporates from your skin, it can just make dryness worse.

  1. Dryness – what it leads to?

The arid air and the low humidity on board can erase the hydrolipidic film of the skin. Once its protection is gone, the derma starts overcompensate for the dryness with producing more sebum. As a result the skin is dehydrated and greasy at the same time which cause discomfort during the flight and after this.

Some of  you remember the “awful” bard coffee. Actually it is normal coffee, but our mucus membranes are dried out. Worse than dryness are the nose bleeding and the red itching eyes. The decision is combined eye-and-nose drops, which should be used every two hours in order to moisturize the mucus membranes. Of course, do not forget the lip balm.

  1. 3. Sun protection.

During a flight we are physically closer to the sun, which means the risks from the UV rays are bigger. Especially for the ones with window seats. You must know that the influence of these rays cause prematurely aging of the skin, wrinkles and pigmentations. Not that necessary for a night flight, but a must for a daily one – my offer is one of these: La Roche-Posay, Avene, Bioderma.

  1. 4. „High“ can steal our glow.

The ones from you who have already been in the mountains are able to compare the feeling of standing on top of a mountain with the pressure of a plane. The higher the altitude, the less blood flow to the skin, which may make for a dull appearance. So don’t worry if your seat partner become a little dull.

  1. Post-flight puffiness? Blame water retention.

Inactivity as well as too much salty suggestions from the board menu are the main culprits for the water retention. We can’t feel it during the flight, but after landing the puffiness is absolutely notable. To get out of this we need to get a bit of exercise to mobilize the extra fluid to get out of your bodies.

  1. 6. Travel stress can cause serious skin problems.

No matter how dynamic world we live in, no matter how fast the technologies perform, we can’t deny that air travel today is rather stressful. Even if we are calm during flight, the body can feel the change of level and sends signals to the brain. The brain, on another hand, starts producing more kortizol (stress hormone) which can cause imbalance in the skin physiology – Inflammatory conditions of the skin like eczema, psoriasis, itching, acne. To prevent any of this, it is good not to apply makeup during flight, but to clean the face with wet wiper with balanced pH. It is enough to keep in mind all of the above in order for our skin to be calm during flight.
